These Banks
"A loan At Last" Entrepreneur Magazine, June 1995

Shouldn't it be easier
to get a small loan than a big one?  Common sense would say so.  After all, you're not asking for the moon, or even a million dollars--just for a little capital.

Well, if you've ever tried to get a small loan, you know that sometimes, getting a little money is harder than getting a lot.  But not always--not if you have the following valuable information; a list of "micro-business friendly" lenders from the Small Business Administration.  More than 25 percent of the loans these banks made between June, 1993 and June 1994 were "microloans," or loans of less than $100,000.

The top 100 banks are the friendliest to small business--meaning more than one-third of their loans were for less than $100,000.  These top 100 banks are ranked according to the percentage of microloans they granted.  When it comes to obtaining business financing, knowing where to go is half the battle.

Big on being small
BY REID MAGNEY of the La Crosse Tribune

Finding the money to start or expand a small business can be one of an entrepreneur's biggest obstacles, especially someone with a great idea but a not-so-great grasp of finance.

An obvious but under-appreciated resource for capital is the local bank.  A study from Bauer Financial Reports shows "a pleasantly surprising enthusiasm on the part of the banking industry to originate small business loans," said Paul A. Bauer, president of the research firm.  Nationally, almost two-thirds of the banks and thrifts have commercial loans in small businesses.  "We didn't think it would be that high," Bauer said.

Locally, several banks are devoting quite significant portions of their assets to small business loans, according to the report.  And one has even been recognized as a national leader.

Park Bank came in 50th in a ranking of the nation's top 100 microloan lenders by Entrepreneur Magazine, which used data from the Small Business Administration.  A microloan is less than $100,000.  The ranking isn't based upon the amount of loans made, but on the percentage of a bank's assets invested in microloans.

"We're not used to being on anybody's national short list," said Doug Farmer, Executive Vice President of Park Bank.

As of June 30, 1994, Park Bank had made $7.3 million in microloans, accounting for 38.6 percent of its $19.1 million in assets.

WALTER AND ROSINE MACOMBER of Caledonia, Minn., received a Small Business Administration loan through Park Bank in La Crosse for approximately $60,000 to start Macober's Appliance Center.  Rosine said they got hooked up with a Park Bank banker through a small business seminar sponsored by the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse.
